A hypothetical question(s)...

If a firestorm of the same magnitude as the great fire of 1871 swept through the city and burned it all to the ground next week, would the people of Chicago and the nation have the same zeal to rebuild it? If it were rebuilt would it be rebuilt bigger and better? How would the urban form of the city change after rebuilding, for example would the grid be abandoned and the city rebuilt in the organic sprawl plan of the suburbs or would it maintain the grid? (I know that this is unlikely since most buildings in the city are not made entirely of wood as they were back then but humor me anyway.)>
