Data from Skyscrapers.com Tallied for Chicago

In an earlier thread, I had asked people to guess which year was the most active in terms of skyscraper completion in the city of Chicago.

The most active year was 1928. I'm basing my calculations on data from www.skyscrapers.com, which I assume is comprehensive. I included both existing buildings and buildings that have been demolished, so as not to bias the numbers against past years.

The few years immediately before the great depression were phenomenal in terms of the sheer numbers of skyscrapers built. When you add to that the quality of crafsmanship evident in many of the buildings of this period, you get the sense those were the best few years for the skyline in Chicago's history. From 1926-1929, approximately 170 skyscrapers come onto the market. The only period that seems to compare (in terms of numbers, certainly not quality) is the mid-1960s.
