The more I think about it, the more I am convinced: Macy's elimination of the Marshall Field's name merely shortened the end of a great institution that very well was coming to a slower end without Federated. Why? Department stores are dinosaurs. They're rooted in the past and tradition may be one reason they are still alive. As retailing continues to change and evolve, department stores become less and less relevant. If you buy into that assessment, than truth be known...Marshall Field's, as a department store, would have come to a close on its own, with or without Macy's Would I be surprised if all department stores were gone in 20 years? No, I wouldn't. If Field's had stayed Field's and, if somehow, been in local hands: what do you think would have happened when it was time for this great name to be "retired". What would the company done with the store without a need for a department store? What would they have done with the name?> |
