Fields vs. Carsons

In light of the recent Field's threads, I thought I'd this one out:

Is there anything left of the old Marshall Field's/Carson Pirie Scott rivalry left?

In times past, when both chains were locally owned and not parts of conglomerates, there was enough rivalry between the two department stores that were always considered at the apex in Chicago; Weibolt's, Boston Store, Goldblatts, Sears, Wards, etc. were never in the same league.

Field's was Hertz and Carsons, as Avis, always tried harder and often used a lot of promotional pizzaz in its competiton with Field's. Both had a lively rivalry not only downtown, but in the 50's-70's spread to suburbia.

Today, both chains are owned by other companies in other cities. Neither projects the same image. Both, to a degree, have become less pricey. And of course, there is more competition from the likes of Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, and even the specialty stores like Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Saks, etc.

So with all that change, is there anything left of the concept of Field's vs. Carsons.....or is it, as I suspect, merely history?>
